MORGAN’S WORK
What’s you project?
Currently I’m writing a fantasy novel that reads more like a ghost story. Fireman is about a disheartened politician who takes a chance to make a positive difference in someone’s life- and as a result finds herself kidnapped by the titular fireman, who is not the same thing as a firefighter. Things get worse from there.
How long have you been creating?
The first time I tried to seriously write a book was when I was in eighth grade, so in the early 2000s. Since then I’ve done plenty of world building and character creation with a little bit of actual storytelling thrown in here and there. I’ve been working on this iteration of Fireman for about three years now.
What are your current goals as a creator?
Stories are a potent form of communication. I have a specific vision, and I want to do a good job of getting that across to my audience.
THE NEED FOR A SOLUTION
What challenges led you to look for help?
As a perfectionist I used to agonize over technical details in my writing while failing to identify bigger problems within the narrative. After a lot of frustration and ditched drafts it became clear that I needed an outside perspective to help identify what needed improvement and what I could leave alone.
How did you try to fix the problems you were seeing before you reached out for help?
When I got frustrated with a draft that didn’t meet my expectations, I used to set it aside for months before starting over completely. The first chapter ended up being rewritten more times than I can recall before I decided to get outside help.
DECISION PROCESS
What was important to you when deciding to reach out?
Experience and understanding. I needed someone who could parse what I was trying to say and give me suggestions on how to say it more clearly.
Why did you decide to contact Robin specifically?
Robin hosted and judged a writing tournament I participated in a while back. It was my first experience getting feedback from an objective outside source on anything I had written, and at every turn she impressed me with her insightfulness. The tournament helped me build confidence in my literary aspirations like nothing else had. When I found out about their consulting services, it was too good an opportunity to pass up.
IMPLEMENTATION
What was the process of working together like?
Working with Robin has been delightful. They’re genuinely invested in seeing others succeed and has the insight to help them along that path. They’re also easy to talk to.
Did Robin’s work meet your expectations?
Yes, it did. I can comfortably say that my book wouldn’t exist in its current state without their help and guidance.
Is there a particular aspect of the service you liked most?
One thing that really works for me is the time Robin takes to understand what I’m trying to say with my story. Their perspective shows me what my audience is going to read versus what I think I’ve written down, and they’ll ask for clarification when anything in the descriptions is unclear.
RESULTS
How has the consultation helped you achieve your goals?
Having someone to look over my story and tell me that it’s not garbage has been a huge motivator for continuing to write. Having someone who will help me make it better keeps that effort from going to waste.
Robin is very thorough, professional, fairly priced, and overall just good at their job.
